About Wiza Pottery:
There are several factories in the Boleslawiec region; most of my pottery comes from the Zaklad Ceramiczny Stanislaw Wiza factory, or Wiza. The bottom of each piece of pottery is filled with information: it will bear the mark of the factory, the words “hand made in Poland, and a number corresponding to the artist who made the piece.
Some pieces will bear the artist’s signature or the stamp “UNIKAT,” meaning “unique” or limited edition, and UNIKAT pieces usually cost more. The ceramics are not limited to dinnerware; they are also fashioned into bakeware, kitchen accessories, candle holders, cheese bells, decorative pieces, and even Christmas ornaments.
Boleslawiec (Bowl-e-swa-vee-etz) is located on the Bobr River on the German and Czech border. This region of the world has been a potter's community dating to the 7th century. Created from a white clay and fired in coal and gas ovens at temperatures in excess of 1350 degrees centigrade with a lead-free glaze, this stoneware is safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave and oven. It is also non-toxic and impervious to abrasives. As an extremely durable stoneware, it will not crack or chip easily. "Ceramika Artystyczna-Artistic Ceramics" opened its production in 1950 in the former factory "Paul und Sohn" (1893-1945). The variety of production forms include numerous museum copies and traditional shapes. Stamped pottery decorations with the famous "eye of the peacock's tail" motif have been produced since the beginning of the 19th century and are recognized among the finest examples of European pottery. Village craftsmen and peasants of lower Silesia, inspired by the peacock's feather motif, have added incredible strength and beauty to these objects, which have long been admired for their quality and decorative appeal. Each piece is hand painted and initialed/signed by skilled artisans
.
Pottery from the Boleslawiec Region of Poland is among the most famous in the world. In this region that lies in Southern Poland, near the German border, there are many ceramics factories, including Zaklad Ceramiczny Stanislaw Wiza, producing wonderful ceramic pottery from the famous Boleslawiec clay.
The village of Parowa, located 13 km west of the town of Boleslawiec, has long been an important ceramics production center. There you will find a factory, Zaklad Ceramiczny Stanislaw Wiza, making traditional, hand stamped stoneware of the highest quality.
Because of a careful selection of the right white clay and baking in high temperature kilns, this stoneware with terrestrial glazes is flame proof and microwave safe.
